Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP)

  • Dates: January 1 – March 31 each year.
  • Coverage Start: Changes take effect the first day of the month after you make the change.

This period is specifically for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. During the MA-OEP, you can:

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan (with or without drug coverage).
  • Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
  • If you return to Original Medicare, you can also add a Part D prescription drug plan.

Important: You can only make one change during this period.

  • You cannot switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage during MA-OEP (that’s only allowed during the Annual Enrollment Period in the fall).
  • You cannot add a Part D plan if you already have Original Medicare without first switching back from Medicare Advantage.
  • Second Chance: If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15 – Dec 7) and realize it doesn’t meet your needs, the MA-OEP gives you a chance to adjust.
  • Flexibility: Lets you correct mistakes or respond to unexpected changes in provider networks, drug coverage, or costs.
  • Peace of Mind: Ensures you’re not locked into a plan for the entire year if it isn’t working for you.
  • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP): First chance to enroll when you turn 65.
  • General Enrollment Period (GEP): Jan 1 – Mar 31, for those who missed IEP.
  • Annual Enrollment Period (AEP): Oct 15 – Dec 7, for making broad changes.
  • MA-OEP: Jan 1 – Mar 31, specifically for Medicare Advantage enrollees to make one switch.
  • Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs): Triggered by qualifying life events like moving or losing employer coverage.

The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1 – Mar 31) is a safety net for Medicare Advantage enrollees. It allows one change—either switching to another Medicare Advantage plan or returning to Original Medicare with Part D.

This ensures consumers aren’t stuck with a plan that doesn’t fit their health or financial needs.
