Accelerated Death Benefits (ADB)

Definition: An accelerated death benefit (ADB) is a rider or built-in feature that lets you access part of your life insurance death benefit while you’re still alive if you face a serious health condition.

Purpose: It gives you financial support during critical times and reduces stress for you and your family.

  • If you are diagnosed with a terminal illness (often with a life expectancy of 12–24 months), you can request an advance on your death benefit.
  • The insurer pays out a portion of your policy’s death benefit while you’re alive.
  • The remaining benefit goes down by the amount you received. That balance is paid to your beneficiaries when you pass away.

Example: A policyholder with a $250,000 policy is diagnosed with a terminal illness. They may access $100,000 while alive. After death, beneficiaries receive the remaining $150,000.

Accelerated death benefits may apply if you experience:

  • Terminal illness (limited life expectancy)
  • Chronic illness (unable to perform daily living activities like bathing or dressing)
  • Critical illness (major health events such as cancer, heart attack, or stroke)
  • Long-term care needs (nursing home or in-home care)

  • Immediate Support: Provides funds when you need them most.
  • Flexibility: You can use the money for medical bills, household expenses, or income replacement.
  • Peace of Mind: Your policy supports you during life, not just after.

  • Reduced Death Benefit: The payout to beneficiaries will be smaller.
  • Possible Fees: Some insurers charge administrative fees for accessing benefits.
  • Tax Implications: ADB payouts are generally tax-free, but specific circumstances may vary.
  • Availability: Not all policies automatically include ADB—sometimes it’s an optional rider.

Accelerated death benefits turn life insurance into a living financial resource. They let policyholders:

  • Access funds during serious health events.
  • Reduce financial stress for themselves and their families.
  • Maintain dignity and stability during challenging times.
