Fixed Indemnity Plans

Fixed indemnity plans pay a set cash amount for specific medical services—such as doctor visits, hospital stays, or lab tests—regardless of the actual bill amount. They are not ACA-compliant insurance, but can be used as a supplement to help offset out-of-pocket costs.

  • Fixed Payments: Receive a predetermined dollar amount per service (e.g., $100 per doctor visit, $500 per hospital day).
  • Cash Benefits: Money is paid directly to you, not the provider—you decide how to use it.
  • Flexible Use: Funds can be used for deductibles, copays, coinsurance, or even non-medical expenses like rent or groceries.
  • Year-Round Enrollment: Available outside ACA Open Enrollment periods.

What Fixed Indemnity Plans Don’t Provide

Section titled “What Fixed Indemnity Plans Don’t Provide”

These plans are not a substitute for ACA coverage. Limitations include:

  • No essential health benefits guarantee (such as maternity, mental health, or preventive care)
  • No coverage for preexisting conditions unless specifically stated
  • No subsidies: ACA premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions cannot be used
  • Limited protection: Benefits may not match actual medical costs, leaving potential gaps

Who Might Consider Fixed Indemnity Coverage?

Section titled “Who Might Consider Fixed Indemnity Coverage?”
  • Consumers with high-deductible ACA plans who want help covering upfront costs
  • Families who want predictable cash benefits for routine care or hospital stays
  • Individuals seeking extra financial protection beyond ACA coverage
  • People who want flexibility to use benefits for medical and non-medical expenses

Fixed indemnity plans are supplements, not replacements. They work best when layered with ACA coverage to reduce financial stress from deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
