Fixed Indemnity Plans
What Are Fixed Indemnity Plans?
Section titled “What Are Fixed Indemnity Plans?”Fixed indemnity plans pay a set cash amount for specific medical services—such as doctor visits, hospital stays, or lab tests—regardless of the actual bill amount. They are not ACA-compliant insurance, but can be used as a supplement to help offset out-of-pocket costs.
Key Features
Section titled “Key Features”- Fixed Payments: Receive a predetermined dollar amount per service (e.g., $100 per doctor visit, $500 per hospital day).
- Cash Benefits: Money is paid directly to you, not the provider—you decide how to use it.
- Flexible Use: Funds can be used for deductibles, copays, coinsurance, or even non-medical expenses like rent or groceries.
- Year-Round Enrollment: Available outside ACA Open Enrollment periods.
What Fixed Indemnity Plans Don’t Provide
Section titled “What Fixed Indemnity Plans Don’t Provide”These plans are not a substitute for ACA coverage. Limitations include:
- No essential health benefits guarantee (such as maternity, mental health, or preventive care)
- No coverage for preexisting conditions unless specifically stated
- No subsidies: ACA premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions cannot be used
- Limited protection: Benefits may not match actual medical costs, leaving potential gaps
