How to Shop, Compare & Enroll in ACA Health Insurance
Section titled “How to Shop, Compare & Enroll in ACA Health Insurance”Getting covered under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is easier than you might think. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Gather Your Info
Section titled “Step 1: Gather Your Info”Before you start, have this ready:
- Your ZIP code
- Household size and income
- Social Security numbers or immigration documents
- Current health coverage info (if any)
- Employer coverage offer (if applicable)
Step 2: Preview Plans & Prices
Section titled “Step 2: Preview Plans & Prices”You can preview plans and estimated costs before applying:
- Visit HealthCare.gov, HealthSherpa or your state’s Marketplace (if applicable)
- Enter your ZIP code, income, and household details
- See available plans, monthly premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs
- Check if you qualify for premium tax credits or cost-sharing reductions
Tip: Look for Silver plans if you qualify for extra savings.
Step 3: Compare Plans

Step 4: Enroll

- Online at HealthCare.gov or HealthSherpa
- Your state’s Marketplace (if applicable)
- With help from a licensed agent
Open Enrollment generally runs November 1 to January 15 (verify your state’s enrollment period).
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you’ve had a major life change (like losing coverage, getting married, or having a baby).
