Catastrophic Health Plans

Catastrophic health plans are low-premium, high-deductible ACA plans. They protect you against worst-case medical expenses.

These plans are designed for people who want basic coverage at the lowest possible monthly cost.

  • Low monthly premiums: Usually the cheapest ACA option
  • High deductibles: You pay thousands out-of-pocket before most services are covered
  • Essential health benefits: Covers the same 10 essential benefits as other ACA plans
  • Preventive care: Certain services are at no cost even before you meet the deductible
  • Primary care visits: Includes 3 primary care visits per year before the deductible applies

Catastrophic plans are not for everyone:

  • Eligibility: Only available if you’re under 30 or qualify for a hardship exemption
  • No subsidies: Premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions do not apply
  • High out-of-pocket risk: Deductibles are often more than $9,000, meaning most routine care is paid out of pocket

  • Young adults under 30 who want the cheapest ACA option
  • Healthy individuals who rarely need care but want protection from emergencies
  • People with hardship exemptions who don’t qualify for subsidies

Catastrophic plans are real ACA insurance—but they’re designed as emergency coverage only.

If you qualify for subsidies, a Bronze or Silver plan may be more affordable and offer better everyday protection.
