Critical Illness and Chronic Illness Riders

A critical illness rider gives you a lump-sum payout if you are diagnosed with a covered major illness.

Often includes:

  • Cancer
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Organ transplant
  • Other life-threatening conditions

You receive a portion of your death benefit early to help cover:

  • Medical bills
  • Lost income
  • Lifestyle adjustments

The payout reduces the remaining death benefit available to your beneficiaries.

A policyholder with a $250,000 policy is diagnosed with cancer. They may access $75,000 to cover treatment costs. The remaining $175,000 is paid to beneficiaries later.

A chronic illness rider gives you benefits if you can no longer perform basic daily living activities. These are called Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) and include feeding, continence, bathing, toileting, transferring, and dressing.

This rider typically requires a physician to certify that you cannot perform 2 or more Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).

You can receive part of your death benefit early to pay for:

  • Long-term care
  • Home health services
  • Assisted living or in-home support

Like critical illness riders, the early payout reduces the final death benefit.

A policyholder who can no longer perform daily activities may access $100,000 from a $300,000 policy to pay for in-home care.
